The Biden administration has identified India as one of its most important partners and looks forward to deepening ties during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming state visit to the US. The visit is an opportunity to advance a free and open Indo-Pacific region as well as strengthening trade and security partnerships. The Indo-Pacific has become a focus due to China’s aggressive behavior in contested territorial disputes in the South China Sea and the East China Sea. The US, Japan, India, and Australia have proposed forming a “quad” or four-way alliance to counter China’s actions in the region. The US also hopes to deepen cultural exchanges and welcomes Indian students interested in studying in the US.
