Legendary Bollywood actress Bindu recently shared her disappointment at not receiving an award in the early years of her career. She was nominated nine times for the prestigious Filmfare Awards but was not able to secure a win. Bindu feels that she did not get an award for her first film, Do Raste (1969), only because she was a newcomer then. She also pointed out that the same rationale was not used when Jaya Bachchan was awarded for her performance in the film, Baby (1971).
In an exclusive video interview with Bollywood Hungama, Bindu shared that she was denied an award despite garnering the highest number of votes for Do Raathe. She stated that she came to know that she got the maximum votes, yet she was not given the award. This happened three to four times, and it always happened in Filmfare. Bindu was recommended for the Dastan award, but she received votes but was not awarded.
Bindu admitted that winning awards would have boosted her confidence, especially when she was new to the industry. She was disappointed at the time but believes that awards should be given to emerging artists to boost their confidence. She established her position in the film industry early on with her prodigious acting skills and emerged as one of the leading actresses in Hindi films to perform cabaret dance numbers. She also featured in Main Hoon Na, Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! and many other small screen films.
Overall, Bindu expresses her disappointment that she did not receive an award when she deserved one. However, it is heartening to see her support emerging artists and encourage the boost of their confidence. She is a pioneering actress in the Indian film industry and continues to be a timeless icon.
